Privacy Policy June 2021

Privacy Policy  06/06/2021

The European Union  formalised previous legislation and the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) came into force across Europe on May 25, 2018.  Within the UK the Westminster Parliament introduced the Data Protection Act (2018), which superseded the previous 1998 Data Protection Act.

As this website has been accessed occasionally by people in parts of Europe as well as all across the UK (and even in other parts of the world), it is important to clarify that the owner of the website is aware of the need to follow strict protocols relating to the protection of personal data.

At the heart of GDPR is personal data. Broadly this is information that allows a living person to be directly, or indirectly, identified from data that is available. This can be something obvious, such as a person's name, location data, or a clear online username, or it can be something that may be less instantly apparent: IP addresses and cookie identifiers can be considered as personal data. This privacy statement will cover both of these.

This privacy statement relating to www.dayshare.co.uk  will seek to clarify what data is being collected and for what purposes. Many of us are perhaps oblivious to the amount of personal data which is being collected about us. This statement will relate to the processes involved in the work of this website.

Under GDPR there's also a few special categories of sensitive personal data that are given greater protections. This personal data includes information about racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs, membership of trade unions, genetic and biometric data, health information and data around a person's sex life or orientation. This website does not collect any such data in any form whatsoever.  Most users of the site remain fully anonymous to me. Those who choose to subscribe to the mailing list need to be assured that the data they have provided is not shared with other parties.

It is important to identify two key terms relating to data associated with the activities of this website. The GDPR distinguishes between controllers and processors of data.

Controllers are the main decision-makers – they exercise overall control over the purposes and means of the processing of personal data," the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) says. "Processors act on behalf of, and only on the instructions of, the relevant controller," the ICO says. Controllers have stricter obligations under GDPR than processors.

As the owner of this website, I am the 'controller' of the personal data. I am clearly identified in the website in order to be fully transparent.

Wix.com are the 'processors' of the data  and other companies are involved such as Google and Facebook. This privacy statement will clarify how these organisations are part of the process of running this website.

What information is collected by the www.dayshare.co.uk website?

The Day Share website receives, collects and stores any information you enter on our website or provide us in any other way.  This is mainly through the process of subscribing to our mailing list. Every subscriber is asked to provide an email address which Wix.com then uses to notify subscribers regarding the details of each new blog being posted on the website. In addition, when there is any significant new development in the website, I choose to notify subscribers by email and also via a private group in WhatsApp.

Some visitors choose to become site members which provides them with additional access to certain pages. Currently,  most member pages are closed while work is continuing on the public pages. However, only members can access the members' chat room and have the facility to comment on each blog. Members have been asked to provide more information than subscribers and this is stored in the Wix.com database. This data is as follows - first name, second name, postal address, telephone number and email address. Most members have not supplied as much information as this and this is entirely at their discretion. Members also provide login information by password but I have no access to this password. It is stored in the Wix.com database. If a member wishes to change their password, there is a process of doing that but I am never made privy to the password.

Every time someone accesses the website they are perhaps unwittingly leaving data with WIX, the website provider or in data protection language, the processor.  For every user Wix.com collects the Internet protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet and login. I have access to Wiz Analytics which is a  software tool used to measure and collect session information, including page response times, length of visits to certain pages, page interaction information, and methods used to browse away from the page. The website uses cookies to track your movements around the website. As the owner of the website, I am provided with statistical anonymised data which is the product of this data collection. I do not have any data which could allow me to identify individuals apart from those who have subscribed to the mailing list or have become site members.

The website is open to everyone regardless of race, gender, social class, nationality, religion, sexual orientation etc.  Most subscribers would perhaps identify themselves as evangelical Christians and the website promotes Bible study from a what might be seen as a traditional evangelical perspective. However, we welcome all users of the website and respect their right to hold opinions different from ours. As owner of the website, I will not allow people's opinions to define their identity or to classify users by any of these factors - race, gender, social class, nationality, religion, sexual orientation etc.

How does the Day Share website www.dayshare.co.uk collect information?

The previous section has already considered how data is collected but it is important that this is clearly stated.  Firstly, subscribers provide enough information about themselves to allow us to communicate with them - an email address is all that is required for this process.

Secondly, members have already provided more personal information as part of the model website which was provided by Wix.com.  This section is being reviewed as a matter of some urgency and decisions will require to be made about the future direction of this part of the website. At the moment, most of the website is open to all users apart from the ability to leave comments or to chat with each other.

Thirdly, as part of the website analytical process which provides anonymous data, Wix.com collects data in the background from all users of the website.

Your personal information will be only used for the specific purposes detailed in this statement and will not be shared with other organisations.

Why does the Day Share website www.dayshare.co.uk collect such information?

We collect such Non-personal and Personal Information for the following purposes:

  1. To provide and operate the Day Share service for our visitors, subscribers and members;

  2. To provide our Users with ongoing assistance and support;

  3. To be able to contact our Visitors and Users with general or personalized service-related notices and promotional messages;

  4. To create aggregated statistical data and other aggregated and/or inferred Non-personal Information, which we or our business partners may use to provide and improve our respective services;

  5. To comply with any applicable laws and regulations.

How does the Day Share website www.dayshare.co.uk  store, use, share and disclose site visitors personal information?

Day Share is run by a private individual and is not a company despite its domain name.  The website is hosted on the Wix.com platform. Wix.com provides us with the online platform that allows us to provide a service to you. Your data may be stored through Wix.com data storage, databases and the general Wix.com applications. They store your data on secure servers behind a firewall.

As there are no payments or financial transactions as part of the Day Share service, no financial details are stored by the website and consequently there is no data transfer with credit card companies and other financial organisations.

There were two systems in place prior to the setting up of the website - involving communicating via WhatsApp and Microsoft Outlook. Day Share messages were sent out every alternate day using both these services. The WhatsApp group still continues to operate and the members of the Day Share group have supplied their personal mobile phone numbers as well as their names to me. This is stored in WhatsApp and is not shared with other providers. There is no facility to communicate directly from the Wix.com website to this WhatsApp group so this list will continue to be held securely by me. All members of this group are known to me personally and it is a private group.  There are plans to migrate the Microsoft Outlook email group to the Wix.com website but there may be times when it is necessary to communicate with subscribers via email independent of the website. The existing protocol was to use the system of blind carbon copy so that those receiving the email were not aware of the other email addresses. This will continue to prevent accidental disclosure of email addresses to a third party. All such emails are sent out using Microsoft Exchange to provide greater security.  They cannot be sent from my mobile phone or other means.

How does the Day Share website www.dayshare.co.uk communicate with site visitors?

As owner of the website, I do not communicate with all site visitors apart from encouraging them to subscribe to the mailing list. Only those visitors who choose this option receive further communications from the website via an email every alternate day notifying them of the posting of the latest blog. In addition, I  send emails (using Microsoft Exchange and selecting the blind carbon copy option to prevent disclosure of other emails) at random times to inform the subscribers of additional developments in the website. I also communicate every alternative day with members of the WhatsApp group via an encrypted message. This is via their mobile phone. I also promote the website via this Day Share WhatsApp group and also post a link to the latest blog on Facebook.

It is worth noting that the majority of the subscribers or members of the WhatsApp group are known to me personally or have been recommended by a known contact.

What procedures are in place to protect the identity of people in photographs and videos.

The Day Share website makes use of visual images in various forms. While being acutely aware of copyright laws, it is also necessary to protect the privacy of anyone who could be identified in photographs.  Any people appearing in photographs will have given their consent in writing. Many pictures come from external sources such as Wix.com or Unsplash. It will be assumed that these companies have sought the consent of their subjects to appear in any photographs.

How does the Day Share website www.dayshare.co.uk use cookies and other tracking tools?

As owner of the website, I do not set up any tracking devices such as cookies. However,  I am fully aware that Wix Analytics employ cookies to provide me with anonymised data regarding movement around the website. Users are provided with the option of blocking all cookies or selecting which cookies to allow. The reports from Wix Analytics provides helpful insights into the functionality of the website. As a one-person operation,  this facility is extremely useful in determining priorities for improvement and development.

The following cookies are used routinely by Wix.com to provide the website service.

Wix.com; manage.wix.com; support.wix.com; users.wix.com; www.wix.com; www.wixanswers.com

In addition, Google Analytics employ cookies as part of the Search Engine Optimisation process. I have not detected these in use to date.

There is a cookie banner which allows users to disable cookies either selectively or completely.

If I make material changes to this policy, I will notify you here that it has been updated, so that you are aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we use and/or disclose it.
