I wrote this poem a few years ago, after a loved one lost their family member to covid.
I remember texting while he was unwell to say I was praying, so when news came that he had died, I instantly began a message to say I was praying…
I stopped in my tracks, as I thought, how easy it would be for them to think, ‘and what good will that do’?
My previous prayers had certainly not been answered in the way we had hoped.
And yet, I knew that to pray, was the greatest thing I could continue to do… and so, I penned this poem, and I prayed.
I hope it may be helpful, either for others who have felt as I have, with fear around using those words, or for those who have heard the words ‘I will pray for you’ and wondered what exactly that means.
Sharing this now, with courage, and love for one and all 🙏🏻
When I say ‘I will pray’
When I say ‘I will pray for you’
I’m not saying your request will be granted
But I’m saying, I will present your request
When I say ‘I will pray’
I’m not saying the ‘answer’ will look the way you hope it will
But I’m saying there will be an answer, even if we don’t understand it
When I say ‘I will pray’
I’m not saying relax, everything will be fine!
I’m simply saying I will speak to the one who knows all things, and can bring peace in all situations
When I say I will pray
I don’t mean it glibly
I mean I will intercede for you about your situation and circumstance
Before I say ‘I will pray’
I sometimes wonder what solace that will bring.
I wonder if you will comprehend the comfort of knowing, the Saviour listens and cares
I sometimes worry when I say, I will pray,
That it’s not enough.
And yet I say I will pray.
And it’s not just words.
I Will. Pray
I will pray
Because I believe in my heart, the Heavenly Father listens, and cares
I will pray
Because I believe, whatever the outcome, that God is the one who will see you through. Good or bad. Hopeful or hopeless. Rain clouds or rainbows.
And so, when I say I will pray. I WILL pray.
