Johan's Meditations on the Ascension: Friday 17th May 2024

The ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • The circle which began with Jesus first coming is completed.

[50] And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. [51] While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. [52] And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, [53] and were continually in the temple blessing God. (Luke 24:50-53) See also Acts 1:1-11.

  • There is a song about Jesus ascension. (Read 1 Timothy 3:16)

  • The Lord Jesus' coming was unique and the manner He left earth was also unique

  • He ascended two months after He died. He took His body with Him.

  • Jesus left this world when He was alive again never to die ever again.

  • Jesus is also coming back to this earth, in the same way as He went.

  • He went up before their eyes, but they were not sad but worshipped!

  • The heavens changed, because Jesus went back as a Man. (See 1 Timothy 2:5)

  • The first time,  since Adam was separated from the Lord in the Garden of Eden, that a man came into God's presence, to restore everything (1 Corinthians 15:28)

  • Jesus became the Head of His church and will be King of the universe.

  • In the Old Testament the order is: God, angels, men and animals. In the New Testament the order is: God, men, angels and animals. Believers in the New Testament are in their position above the angels.

  • Jesus went back, as the Mediator between God and men. (1 Timothy 2:5)

  • Jesus went back as the High Priest who intercedes for us. (Hebrews 7:25).

  • Jesus went back to baptise all believers in the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:13)

  • Jesus went back as our Pioneer and as our Forerunner. (Hebrews 12: 6:20).

  • Jesus is our advocate when the devil attacks us. Revelation  12:11; 1 John. 2:1.

Why were the disciples so excited?

  • See Luke 24:31. Their eyes were opened and they understood His ways! (Habakkuk also struggled with the Lord but finally he understood (Habakkuk 3:2).

  • They rejoiced because Jesus goes to the right place - back to His Home.

  • Jesus can do more from heaven than from earth. From heaven the devil tempts us and from heaven Jesus is our advocate. (1 John 2:1). Jesus can show the devil His precious blood that has cleansed us all.

  • They rejoiced because Jesus is preparing a home for us all. John 14:2-3

  • They rejoice because they see the cloud which reminds them of God's presence, when they walked all those years in the desert (Exodus 13:21).

  • They rejoice because from there Jesus will intercede for us. (Hebrews 7:25).

  • The last impression remains and Jesus leaves them and blesses them.

  • Jesus does not leave angry because they rejected Him.  The curse is on the cross  Galatians 3:13)Jesus continually blesses all His children. (Ephesians 1:3)
