Some of the recent blogs have focused on the fascinating story of Dawson Mission since its inception in 1902. I have been allowed access to a set of papers, slides, recordings etc relating to the history of the Mission. I have been struck by the number of photographs relating to outings and holidays. Margaret Maclean, who is a member of Dawson Community Church, was brought up in the Mission and she recalls her schooldays when the teacher would ask if anyone had visited Italy and she would be one of the few to put their hands up. The same question would be asked about other places - Switzerland, for example and again she was able to raise her hand honestly. According to Margaret, the teacher was surprised that she had visited so many places - and it was all due to her links with the Dawson Mission. Alex Bain, the Superintendent from 1942 to 1967 was away ahead of his time in organising holidays and day trips. This was prior to cheap package holidays and this was a working class community. It is a great tribute to Alex that these holidays became a regular feature of life at the Mission. The blog today features a series of photographs - mostly without much commentary. We start with the man himself.
